Best New Rock – Mystic Knights, The First Eloi, Brooklyn Doran, Bleary

There’s a new kid in town! They call themselves Mystic Knights and their new single Count is an infectious energetic rock and roll hit. Scanning decades of influence the new single has flashes of mod and new wave punk combined with a turn of the century early indie rock aesthetic. Its a testament to the performances vibrant feel, as the band seemingly pushes the tempo despite keeping it undeniably tight. The reference checks out. Mystic Knights is the new project from Chris Caster of Jet. Like them, we think big things are coming.

The First Eloi makes beautiful noise. The tradition continues on their new single Porcelain. Their contrast reigns majestic within the balance of their serene lead singer and the harmonious chaos brought by the collective band. It’s both dreamy and ferocious, begging to be turned up so you can wade in its immersive bliss. Word is Deftones are making a late career breakthrough. It makes sense. Young bands are simply doing shoegaze proper.

Brooklyn Doran is immediately addictive on their new single Nicorette. This complicated narrative is seeped in contentious subject matter. Something that makes you feel good but isn’t good for you is hard to talk about. Nicorette serves as a fitting metaphor for Doran’s unrequited adoration. Beyond the catchy narrative is a clever composition full of intriguing chord shifts and epic feels. From top to bottom the performance is excellent. Recalling Rock’s golden alternative era, Dora stands on the shoulders of nineties greats like Chris Cornell or LIVE. We simply love this number.

Bleary brings refreshing fun to their new single Sugar Sprint. Slight contrast courtesy of an ironic guitar effect palette gives the new single some contrasting edge, as the melodic nature leans playful in the vein of Weezer and its associate canon. Albeit like Weezer the unassuming Nashville export knows how to play both sides of the coin, keeping it catchy while retaining a moody melancholy essence. The band has paid its dues and is ripe for a proper breakthrough. Sugar Sprint is the kind of hit that has legs. With a magnetic persona at the forefront, we see bigs things coming into focus for Bleary.
