You could say that being a songwriter and a recording artist is a bit of a novelty in 2026. You wouldn’t be wrong. Some of the biggest fans of underground indie music are aspiring artists. They tend to connect with songs that reflect the plight of their pursuit, and they’re getting a great one in Open Mic, the new single from Sweetbreads. NYC singer songwriter Melody Stolpp weaves together a relatable tale full of imagery, time, and place. It’s a rare feat in today’s dreamy vibe filled indie folk world. We find it gracefully refreshing.

Maddie Regent caught our attention with her new single Schoolbags. Rare metaphors and obscure touches of lyrical poetry finds Maddie aware beyond her years. Like the great young songwriters of yore Regent has a way of seeing all the colors in this noir existence. She’s got a lush pretty voice fair enough for Lizzie McAlpine fans, while her writing is smart enough for the Boy Genius canon. We love her.
