Best New Rock – Venetian Blinds, Concourse, Esbie Fonte, Cliff Root

There’s a haunting appeal to Debt Collector, the new single from Venetian Blinds. Their sound is steeped in contrast courtesy of their lead singers lush presence. She molds effortlessly between the cool affect of this songs verse and the dirty noisy evolution into the songs chorus. Stylistically they bring a shoegaze edge with subtle dreamy instincts. They should connect with fans of Wolf Alice, Alvvays, and Wednesday.

Based out of Perkaise, Pennsylvania, songwriters and musicians (and husband and wife) John and Lauren Schiavone formed Concourse in 2017 and released their self-titled EP. They’ve since worked with notable indie producer Will Yip at his legendary Studio 4 setup.

Like a lot of Will’s legacy acts, Concourse has a fifth wave emo essence. We love that sound.

Esbie Fonte is refreshingly relatable on her new single Lost at Sea. Weaving together ironic realities and drawing modern evolutions from unconventional patterns, Esbie seems hyper aware that her generation is different but not different enough from the ones before. She dresses her musings in an indie rock package that reflects an influence of Courtney Barnett but her vocal touch is fairly less thesbian. Fonte is a singer and a truthsayer. She’s taking cult applications. Sign on!

Cliff Root is one of a kind in the rare aura of his single My Pain. An intriguing melodic palette suggests an understanding of traditional folk and sentimental classical. Adapted in this style its an alternative rock songwriter masterclass. My Pain manages to cite an influence of Chris Cornell while adding some fresh new energy to that aura. We love it.
