Best New Indie – Ames Harding & The Mirage, Liang Lawrence, Memorial, Holding Hour

Now for something completely different.  We love what Ames Harding & The Mirage did with their new single The Governor’s Dead.  An island influence within an indie aesthetic offers rare psychedelic reverence and nostalgic assimilation.  Most recently it recalls select works by Phosphorescent while classically we hear the obvious influence of Paul Simon.

The Governor’s Dead also embraces a lofi hazy analog style sheen, adding to the cinematic aura.  Like its own musical world with a less travelled exotic flavor that still feels right within the canon of modern underground psych pop.  Dig in.

Liang Lawrence makes a classic sensibility sound fresh on her gorgeous new single Eulogy.  Tracing a legacy that ascends from the influence of Joni Mitchell up through the 90s adaptations known to acts like Counting Crows and landing on a modern indie influence akin to Clairo, Lawrence packs a legacy of feeling into this haunting release.

It’s an indie pop breakthrough that should amplify her already vibrating buzz status.  Eulogy is a feel good vibe with intriguing lyrical contrast within this construct, existing within the realm of feel good easy listening with a groovy serenade.  There’s also an opportunity to explode in the songs last unassuming moment, a detail we expect her to accentuate in concert.

Memorial – Silver

Memorial makes a statement on their recent Silver.  They show that their recent success is no happy accident, there’s a prolific detail that adds an exciting element to this project.  Songs like Silver simply make you want more.  It’s the kind of aura known to your favorite bands, marrying the aesthetics of surprise with a candid natural feel.

As if an inspired group of apt musicians were brought into this moment and allowed to let themselves feel something;  the song was put in front of them and the band was advised to feel it once.   In that way the performance retains a sense of discovery, an affect that’s exciting and adds to its classic nostalgic reverence.  The singer is believable too., We draw comparisons to Big Thief with the classic Harvest era influence of Neil Young.  Check it out.

We were drawn into the hypnotic affect of Parallel Lines, the new single from Holding Hour.  This intoxicating dream pop feel gets infected by a shoegaze aesthetic and an influence of 80s alternative.

It’s a glorious blend with rare nostalgic brilliance in tandem with indie musics eclectic legacy.  Holding Hour effectively bridge the gap between Beach House, The XX, and Phoebe Bridgers.  Hear for yourself.
