Emerging Folk – Goldschatz, Mermaid, Graham Farrow Knibb, Will Knox

Goldschatz knows how to Keep The Fire Burning and celebrate their partnership with the release of their on theme EP Twin FlameRykka and Timothy Jaromir love each other and life on the road and they write heartwarming songs that stem from the American folk tradition but bear their own signature. This Americana fueled romance shines bright with a festive EP opener.  Keep The Fire Burning is an instant classic tailor made to pair with a monumental moment.  In that way it recalls Franti’s “Say Hey” but with Brandi Carlisle style Nashville appeal.

The Ep also features the stand out Kindness of Strangers.  A charming duet with some Shovels and Rope style epic appeal, the vibe suggests classic instincts to match its Dawes style indie swagger.  Goldschatz could also draw comparisons to Angus and Julia Stone as well as The Civil Wars.  It’s a testament to their emotionally charged performances within a smart compositional framework. Goldschatz is a sure thing for the folk fest circuit and the Mountain Stage.  You’re still early, say you heard them first.

Mermaid – On A Cloud

We lost ourselves in the hypnotic lullaby appeal of On a Cloud, the new single from Mermaid.  Presenting as a haunting duet, this siren song is intoxicating musical melatonin.  The harmonies land soft as the two singers show impressive control.  It’s a charming duet as the two voices sing within and around each other, blending to form one harmonious musical texture.

The subtle dripping production accentuates the concept.  This Mermaid feels like a calm escape to enjoy nestled beneath a warm coffee on a rainy day.  We hear similarities to the works of Kings of Convenience and Feist with some added R&B instinctual flavor.  Peep the video above!

Graham Farrow Knibb is the real deal.  His recent Chin Music is the latest affirmation of our adoration, standing out again with its Alt Country authenticity.  Americana and Red Dirt can both lay claim to this vibe, no matter how you label it you can’t deny its genuine nature.

It’s dusty and rusty but melodically clean, not unlike the work of The Band.  Knibb honors that reference with a proper Helm style shuffle that keeps the groove running.  Chin Music finds Knibb settling into a vibe and letting it stay true, like a trademark number to lay a foundational vibe within his rich canon.  It serves well to pull an unfamiliar listener into his work, where they’ll find an artist full of depth and dynamic.

Will Knox makes Instant Coffee sound impactful.  Within this simple cup is a complex narrative, one that finds a grieving cycle broken between the break of this simple routine.  It’s introspective like the habit itself, offering some temporary respite that brings immediate comfort, but not a cure.

The rapture erupts in the songs closing dramatic moments, as Will Knox honors the emotional payoff we desire as listeners.  You’re rooting him to break through, to embrace this hurt to supercharge his art.  In that way he bridges the stylistic gap between the serene folk of Darlingside and the soulful presence of Hozier.  Hear for yourself.
