Best New Indie – Kai Bosch, underthepropaganda, HunBjørn, chemicalfarm

A rich percussive cadence blesses the winding poetry heard on Tulips, the new single from Kai Bosch.  A textured ASMR style vocal mix illuminates every constenent.  An immersive experimental electro groove churns an influence of disco intriguingly.  It’s an interesting adaptation of the Radiohead influential tree, one that also cites an inspiration of Rhye or James Blake.

Like them all Kai Bosch is intoxicating with an other worldly affect.  Since 2022 they’ve been dripping singles and crafting their sound.  It’s a vibe that will delight those indie music lovers who ascend from that aforementioned Radiohead influential scope.  The Beatles had the Stones, but when it comes to Radiohead, its Radiohead then everyone else.  We’re happy Bosch falls on our preferred side of the arrangement.  Hear for yourself.

Latin indie rockers underthepropaganda honor the bygone legacy of the album with their new full length AY!.  Bypassing the trend of releasing singles in advance, the Chile export dropped the expansive 9 song work in one convincing swoop.  The album opens with the gorgeous duet Don’t Stop with me, which features Sofia Pilar on vocals.  This is our kind of indie pop, cinematic and without boundary.  It launches into the psych sphere as a trademark saxophone convincingly adapts the aesthetic.  As the album evolves songs like No Longer Friends and OBEY advance their affinity for post punk and 80s alternative in the same way it inspired bands like Vampire Weekend and TV On The Radio.

Much like the opening track, the single Quiero Calermo enlists a duet with singer Salares and offers another brilliant bilingual moment.  For us the project effectively breaks the language barrier.  They have an affinity for catchy progressions and diverse Talking Heads style grooves.  The lyrics are meaningful too, reflecting coming of age topics and modern challenges.

For context the band offers that their single This Morning “deals with the daily struggle of facing routine when going through a period of sadness…”  That contrast amplifies the escape that this dance offers.  Both in sound and aesthetic it mirrors underground icons Ra Ra Riot and how their dance ready debut channeled a difficult period for the band.  Fans of all of these aforementioned projects will instantly adore underthepropaganda.

HunBjørn – Words Don’t Disappear

A succulent electro pop jam at its essence, HunBjørn lets you in to her complicated psyche with the imaginative companion video for her single Words Don’t Disappear.  Much like the songs contrast of conventional and abstract, the video features quiet pensive moments intersected with violent destructive outbursts.

We interpreted the storyline to reflect the torturous realization that what’s done can’t be changed.  Whether it’s actions or words, moments haunt you like the conceptual physical burdens.  Gorgeous noir cinematography from producer Julie Montauk enhances the songs overall impact tastefully.  Through her a star is born as HunBjørn embraces their reality as a new electro pop star in the realm of St Vincent or Christine and the Queens.  Watch the video and celebrate this triumph.

chemicalfarm – spider web

Chill pop and a measured influence of emo blend convincingly on spider web, the new single from chemicalfarm.  The singers emotional charm is entrancing, its the song trademark melodic detail.  Atmospheric production and a Steve Lacy style rhythm guitar chart the harmonic framework as the singer dips into realms of pop while citing an undeniable underground temperament.

In that way we also hear evidence of Post Malone, a testament to the tracks eclectic blend within an infectiously catchy vibe.  The mix might be too lofi to break through but there’s real evidence of buzz worthy melodic charm.  Where they go from here we can’t wait to see.
