Emerging Folk – Lily Kershaw, Shawn William Clarke, Michelle Lockey, Christopher & The Saints

Lily Kershaw embraces beauty in contrast on her remarkable new single Love is A Dark Comedy.  Her rare vocal talents recall legends of folklore, as her exotic timbre adapts elegantly between the verse and the chorus.

On one side she embraces an influence of Lana Del Rey while adapting into more of a Natalie Merchant, Sinead O’Connor register for the songs chorus section.  All singers who we adore and all who find some resonance in the brilliance of this work.  Her voice alone is enough to turn heads, but the writing is effective too.  Hear for yourself.

The smooth calculated picking at the onset of Tall Trees blends elegantly into the intoxicating vocal intro from songwriter Shawn William Clarke.  A guitar and some harmonies are all that’s needed to illuminate this classic composition.

Sparse elements of production help expand the harmonious atmosphere without threatening the essence of the work. It’s a gorgeous indie folk throwback, one that cites the influence of Simon and Garfunkel while showing there’s still room to roam within this style.  For that we are eternally grateful.

Michelle Lockey sends out an SOS on her new single Why Don’t They Choose Me?  This sad girl anthem lands relatable.  The lyrics are emotionally defeated in a way that reflects the throes of depression.  Lockey investigates what it could be while offering subltle hints of perseverance.  She’s most reassuring in the bridge section.  There she embraces what makes her different and bears more strength in her delivery.

Though difficult, these works are important as they lend a voice to both sides of this arrangement.  Most importantly, it’s a call to let you know you’re not the anyone.  A call, that if you answer, you might find the right ones.  Everybody has their tribe, you might just have to venture out to find it.

Stylistically Lockey embraces the smooth indie folk feel of self prescribed influences Ingrid Michaelson and The Head and the Heart.  Just one shade from her extensive palette, the diverse artist has won some favorable placements on notable networks CBS and the CW.  It’s just a matter of time before she lands a song in your radio programs regular rotation. We see her.

We were drawn to the emotional conviction heard on Life is a Gamble, the new single from Christopher & The Saints.  A catchy melodic framework gets a boost with this vulnerable narrative, one that finds the artist bearing his insecurities in a way that genuinely humble.

A slight quiver to his vibrato adds to the sincerity of the moment, as the singer sounds on the verge of a meltdown.  It’s relatable in how he’s keeping it together, and the sentiment that life’s a gamble rings true.  Stylistically it’s somewhere between the classic charm of Tom Petty and the new cool vibe known to The National.
