Best New Indie – SOMOH, Gown, Stefan Thordarson, Hot Mud

“I’m your favorite problem child.”  SOMOH pens her mantra with her new single Problem Child.  The artist is assertive in their proclamation, adding a seductive affect to the lyrical delivery that enhances the mischief.

Problem Child is fittingly playful with elegant contrast in its saturated sonic design.  Melodically delicious and very much connected to the current stylistic indie evolution, SOMOH fits right in with industry breakthroughs Clairo, Boy Genius, and Indigo De Souza. You’re still early, but this secret’s catching fire.  SOMOH is an artist to watch.

Gown slams the slow build with their new single In Your Head.  Gloriously cinematic, it’s a production master class.  It embraces modern sonic trends while adding some sonic eruption to this chill pop canon.

The anthemic closing moments give indie rock some fresh footing in the world of dream pop.  It also offer Gown another level to explore that eruption live.  Gown convincingly bridge the realms of Day Wave and MBV, we also hear a semblance of cult indie rockers The Districts or Car Seat Headrest.

Stefan Thordarson is a bright light in the world of imaginative experimental synth pop.  Their new single A Dark Place cites an influence of Thom Yorke in a way that’s exhilarating.

Stefan wears his influence on his sleeve while honoring that legacy with some trademark sonic vitality and rhythmic quip.  The production is vibrant with personality while the vocal adds a central melodic guide, gluing the scattered notes into one blended chord.

You could arrange this with an orchestra convincingly, or baske in the current electronic glow.  A Dark Place is a creative and compositional triumph.

Your new bizarre birthday anthem has arrived in the vibrant cool of Birthday in Rehab, the new single from Hot Mud.  Gloriously entertaining and magically produced, Hot Mud mirrors that lucid lyrical affect known to bands like Ween and Cake. They’re sharing in our existential perplexities and the follies of our common trials in a way thats relatable.  This is a song for anyone who’s able to take life a little less seriously, to inject laughter into their suffering; anyone willing to lighten the load of their fellow flawed companion.

The music offers some added cool kid appeal akin to The Velvet Underground, with some clever melodic references to more jovial cuts by The Beatles.  Seldom do we get to cite the compositional influence of a work like Yellow Submarine but here it is.  Truthfully we like Birthday in Rehab more.  In fact, we adore it!  Dig in!
