Emerging Folk – Babe Club, Memorial, Hello Emerson, Luna Keller

Babe Club drops a vintage classic. Their gorgeous new single Forever Friend  recalls Americana’s early 70s pop inspired pivot.

Taking elements from The Beach Boys and the Beatles, temporary Byrds guitarist Gram Parsons inspired a generation with the formation of the Flying Burrito Brothers.  The aura of that sound was pushed further by the emergence of Dolly Parton.  Both have a stylistic stake in this vibe, a feeling that Babe Club adapts with an indie sensibility akin to Angel Olsen or even Kacey Musgraves.  Singer Jenna Desmond strikes Gold, with a perfect take full of believable tremble.  We’re simply smitten for Forever Friend.

Memorial caught our attention with the release of their new single Circle.  There’s a reminiscence to this vibe.  It triggers your brain to draw up memories at moments of transition and growth.  It’s spurred by the combination of the descending melodic design and in how the vocals are delivered.

The duet adds to the affect, creating a musical conversation and filling that need to share in this moment.  Conjured or real, it doesn’t matter; it sticks.  Circle is a song you’ll return to for the feeling it offers.  In both that manner and in its stylistic presence it recalls the works of Big Thief or early Bon Iver.

Hello Emerson – Church

Hello Emerson wants to reinvigorate your soul in the video for their single Church.  A killer jam in its own right, it’s enhanced by the poetic grace of the video’s narrative.  There’s just something about an old couple squeezing every last bit of joy out of their existence that fills our soul with warmth.  It’s an outstanding love and it offers humanity some hope.  With a rambunctious generation trying to grapple with the limitations of old age, Church is a reminder that you likely won’t change as much as you think, if you don’t want to.

The song has some nice alt country swagger in the vein of The Head and The Heart or The Lumineers.  Like them, Hello Emerson offers music that feels tied to their commitment to their community.  A song for everyone to sing, and a program where everyone’s important.

Luna Keller – If I Was No More

Luna Keller may not be a house hold name, but for those that adore her she’s a rare gem.  It’s a reflection of her consistent output.  A proficient songwriter with an impressive standard of excellence, Keller has been on our radar since our inception, impressing us with a steady string of imaginative heartfelt compositions.

The sentiment rings true with the release of If I Was No More.  The new single represents Chapter V of the Oceans Inside of Me Project.  Each chapter includes its own single and music video companion. The latest, an introspective heart wrenching release of self doubt.  Torn between the throes of hope and desperation, Keller lands relatable in this moment of visual strife.  Stylistically it resonates with writers like Damien Rice and Gregory Alan Isakov.  It’s a serious work within a harmonious melodic grace.
